Meet the Team

The NRT team is made up of engineers and scientists from the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) and the University of Oviedo. Compared to other telescope projects we are a small team: we are exploiting our existing knowledge of the Liverpool Telescope (LT) and the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) along with innovative knowledge from a variety of different sectors, to develop the world's largest robotic telescope. Like the LT, the NRT will be fully autonomous, which means that it does not need any human interaction throughout the night in order to carry out its wide-ranging science observations. To make this work we need to combine the software engineering behind autonomous operations, with the mechanical engineering of the telescope and enclosure itself with the delicate and detailed optical design of the mirrors; an ambitious and exciting project.
